Thermal printers can work as direct thermal where the label coating turns black with heat like a receipt printer but of course the label is self-adhesive,good for low cost applications like mailing.
They also work with a print ribbon usually black but can also be one colour or even a metallic foil. By using a ribbon the print head has extended life as it is protected and lubricated by the back side of the ribbon.
